the garden...

well hello my dear blog...
i think the beauty of this blog is that it's dedicated to my authentic voice and in all my authentic glory i don't have that much time to write. a book called 'writing down the bones' recently found it's way back to me. i love when people return my books! the book was a reminder to make time...time for thought to become words...time for words to become my voice...time for authentic mama.
and i do have a post idea i've been meaning to touch on this blog...my garden.
for five years i have been learning to grow food.  for five years i have watch seeds fail, seeds succeed, weeds take over, harvests neglected, fruits frosted, empty mason jars hoping for the chance to preserve. and this year i said no more! i will get this.
my advice to anyone starting a garden is simple. two things.  keep it small, keep it close by.  gardens are more work than children. it's true!
when i first moved to fernie, bc i volunteered at the community garden where i made friends with a handful of women who would become my mentors.  but the community garden was 7 blocks from my home. too far. so i dug a garden in my yard.  another season wasted because of the weeds. then i moved and didn't have a yard and so i bought books about container gardens. fail.
i dreamed about a flourishing, deck space with flowers, and vegetables...heading into my 3rd summer at this residence i was beginning to feel deflated.
so what changed this year?...dan decided he wanted to grow tomatoes..and lots of them! seriously, all of a sudden my husband took over.  he read magazines about tomatoes, he ordered organic heirloom varieties, he educated me about indeterminate and determinate plants, in general he showed off and gave me two green thumbs up! on april first he spent the whole day sterilizing all the seed trays, bought organic potting soil, grow lights and began to research a cold frame solution for our 16x16 roof top patio.
i didn't get my hopes up until...the seeds actually started sprouting! dan doted on those seedlings, watering, giving them light..explaining to me that i'd have to start bring them outside while he was at work. so i thought okay...i'll help.  little by little my confidence grew...and then the weekend came and what? dan was building a cold frame! thank you pinterest for all your pallet ideas!

so now i was thinking more along the lines of...if he can do it i can do it...which was also my strategy for natural childbirth after my sister gave birth.  if she can do it i can do it. my competitiveness often brings me inspiration and motivation...see, a plus!
i set out to grow flowers...my flourishing patio was going to become a reality. after dan transplanted the seedlings into their second homes-mid size pots, i planted those seed trays with white asylum, purple verbena, cosmos, zinnia, nasturtium, and sweet peas! doted on them even more than dan did his tomatoes, fed them gaia green organic fertilizer sang to them...(yes, sang to them) and watched them sprout! i was shocked.  it's not that hard...it's just that you have to take care of them everyday!( and sing a little) now I had reason to buy POTS! thrifted and painted, garage sale finds, and reduced to clear purchases...this was my kind of gardening.

the thing you should know about growing flowers from seed is that you need a ton of patience. i'm not patient at all...so i went to the garden centre with $40 and bought some flowers to tide me over until mine bloom. i even bought some impatiens...for my impatience - perfect.

i really can't believe my patio is a garden! thanks to my amazing husband and his inability to take short cuts - ever! i finally learned the secret to starting seeds! i love that man.
ps ~ happy summer solstice!

granola and crackers

a couple of weeks ago, i decided it was fine time to organize my pantry.  i have an amazing pantry, but it was always so hard to find what i needed. i realized that i was experiencing food clutter! i didn't take before pictures, but if you remember what my electronic storage before picture looked like...imagine that in the form of baking supplies, dry goods, canned goods, and a host of miscellaneous items~big problem. i devoured blogs on the subject and wanted to buy pretty clear glass storage containers, label makers, shelf liners, and new mason jars, but my budget won't allow for it.  so i spent an hour scrubbing off labels from store bought glass jars that i had on hand, masking tape will do the trick for labels, and in the spring i'll paint the shelves.  i still have to find containers for my flours, sugars, and pastas and work out where to store the camping coolers, wine making supplies, and reusable grocery bags but here's what it looks like now.
PANTRY AFTER (can you believe this is the improvement:)

after organizing the pantry i was inspired to use up some of my bulk dry goods. also, i hit my grocery store budget befoer i got to put multi-grain cheerios in the cart.
my cousin-in-law (she's my husband's first cousin's wife) lindsay over at mountain mama made some of soulemama's granola (from 'cooking with whole foods' by cynthia layer) the last time we visited, and i'd been meaning to try the recipe ever since.

like i always say...get out everything you need first.  this picture is of the dry ingredients. the porridge mix already has flax seed added. the recipe calls for almonds and sesame seeds, but i used pistachios and flax because i had them on hand.
now for the wet ingredients. the recipe also calls for almond extract, but dan has a nut allergy so i left it out. (did you know pistachios are the single-seeded stone fruit of the pistachio tree?)  i'm not really following the recipe am i? i used oil, maple syrup and apple juice too...all from the original recipe.
add the wet to the dry...
 mix
 spread out on baking sheet
 and voila! homemade granola
 mmmm...yum!
the other thing i didn't have room in my grocery budget for was crackers. my boys love ritz crackers. lately i've been worried about the amount of packaging that leaves my home. i'm pretty conscious about it, but still, i bring two grocery bags a week to the recycling bin. part of making my own granola and crackers, is reducing my household waste. who really knows what gets recycled or what goes to the landfill anyways? so back to the ritz crackers. i found stef over at cupcake project
who did all the trial and error for me, and so i tried her recipe i only made one change. her recipe called for 2/3 c. water, but i only used 1/3.  the beauty of this recipe is that the whole thing is made in your food processor! my little helper winston loves kitchen appliances!

i didn't have fancy scalloped cracker size cookie cutters, so i used my shot glass...courtesy of my cousins colin and candice's wedding. best wedding favour ever!

not the prettiest crackers, but they sure taste good!

i heart electronic cable storage

i've missed you blog! i think about you everyday...but lately i'm in love with bloggers, and so with determination i write!
today i organized my electrical cable storage. i know, i know...who cares! right? well, i've been working really hard around my home to 'get organized & stay that way' seriously, it's tons of work!  but it is worth every "i wish i could just si'down and chill out!" moment. honest.
i brought so many boxes of belongings to the sally ann in the past two weeks. it feels so good to let it all go. and you wouldn't believe how easy it is to keep the clutter hidden when there isn't any. my initial inspiration came from the book i blogged about in january, i have crossed out a many 'to do' list items since reading it.  but there was always more to add to the list of to-do's, and some items just got left behind. but then...amy from my h.s. 4x800 track & field relay team introduced me to jen over at i heart organizing on pinterest (if you do not know about pinterest...you better get on it!) and she has given me so much inspiration.  i heart jen!  i was secretly jealous of her too...until yesterday when she revealed her electronic storage! AH HA!!! she's just like you and me! she's got a to do list, she's learning, growing, and sharing tips along the way.  that made me feel better, and i don't envy her any more. since electronic cable storage was one of those 'got left behind' items on my own to do list...well see for yourself.

then my girl dawn came over and she helped me move my crafting desk into my bedroom which free'd up space in the spare room ~turned office today~ for the computer desk, which left my living room looking so spacious and clutter free...my camera is on the fritz, so the pics are kinda shabby, and i wish i'd taken more time for all the before and after shinanigans...but i'll post what i've got, then catch ya up...when i solve my camera dilemma...
spare room BEFORE
AFTER
...still got some work to do
living room BEFORE
AFTER
bedroom corner BEFORE
 AFTER
just you wait and see what this craft corner turns into...then starts to produce! my craft dreams are about to become a reality! i hope this post inspires you to organize your electronic cable storage and more...ha! i gotta get to bed.

Simplify

i was at the thrift store last week and i spotted a book called "simplify your life" i grabbed it in a hurry thinking "perfect! just what i want" then i saw the subtitle..."get organized & stay that way" and i let out a groan. the last thing i wanted to think about was the unthinkable task of getting organized. (think about that sentence) where would i start? good sense won and i bought the book. that's where i started. now i have a family planner, the paper monster vanished, the content of my inbox is a 3 digit number and dropping daily, the laundry is tolerable 'cause i stay caught up and i write everything down! it's not perfect, but it's organized.
the author must be spiritual 'cause at the end of each chapter is 'a simple prayer of thanks'  this is the one after the chapter 'maximize mealtimes'
dear god, thank you for the blessings of family & friends.  Help my kitchen to become a place of refuge from the day and encouragement for facing whatever life brings tomorrow.  fill our mealtimes with love & laughter. and help me to make changes that will make it fun to be at my house. amen.
i like the part about my kitchen being a place to find refuge and encouragement. i want that. and luckily for me i already have fun at my house.  if you're reading this and you don't have fun at your house you might want to try this prayer out;)
my family planner is the best!  everything in one mobile spot.  i got mine at polar peeks books & treasures.

i haven't actually finished reading the book yet. (i'm not that organized) i'm looking forward to the upcoming chapters 'conquer cleaning & clutter'  'simplify your parenting' & 'simply have a great day'
with all this simplifying i've had some extra time to write...here's the latest spoken word

2am angel

i pray to god
'cause i'm a sole guardian
i signed a line that legally binds
that boy's all mine.
so god
when you gonna send
a guardian angel?
so my soul guardianship
shines on so long
i see my soul son
in his soulful boyhood boredom
reach his wholesome manhood
i pray his face
never placed against a
cruiser hood
& could ya
would ya
please
grant me peace, serenity &
regard for humanity
should the cruiser hood days show up
before the man i up and raised
and i pray you find a way
to remind me of my own soulful ways
so in a moment i don't!
stop!
breathe in peace, breathe out love
rise above
raise my prayer
thanks and praise
for my journey today
'cause a mamas biggest weakness
is her imagination of the bleakest
future
we gotta slow down and nurture
our own damn souls
who signed up to guardian my dotted soul line?
me, myself, and i!
 and i'm doing just fine
& it's fine time i wrote a rhyme
designed to describe
my fears.
oh! now you're all ears!
whisperin' 'i can;t believe i'm hear'n this?'
yes i said it!
i worry i might let it
all fall to pieces
do everything so unmistakenly wrong some
childhood psychatrist will
write her thesis
based on my mothering style
all the while
my daily exsistence is merely
trial & error
is it any wonder
i woke from my cruiser lights night terror
with the urge to write a prayer?
it's 2am.
amen.

a day in a life...

another day, another blog post, another new year's resolution.  to write...simply~write.  it happens so fast. one minute you're rising, the next you're hitting the sac. the days fly by and i struggle to capture small moments...glimpses of my life that become cherished memories.  so this year...2012 i intend to capture these moments with my words.  it's not hard...just make time to write~something i love to do.  so authentic mama breathes life again, and it's up to you..yes YOU to keep me motivated. please post a comment if you believe in a mama who wants to s...l...o...w...down and give story to her life.

in the fall of 2011 i participated in the 30 day yoga challenge at essential yoga studio here in fernie, bc. the challenge? 30 days of yoga in 40 days time. i feel compelled to write about this experience today, because well...i want to capture it. i was so proud of myself after the challenge was over. it was hard getting to the studio nearly everyday, but i bent over backwards (no pun intended) and got there, and completed the challenge with one day to spare! wow! you can do anything you put your mind to..and yoga is a great way to help clear your mind.

i couldn't have known how much i need yoga in my life if i hadn't signed up for the challenge.  being at the studio everyday became ritual, and now practicing yoga is  ritual. i rise i salute the sun...it makes me feel like i've taken some time to connect with my mind, body, spirit...and our life force the sun.  after the challenge i didn't have a lot of money to spend on classes at the studio...another wish for 2012. but  i found a fantastic website that i find really affordable that has some great classes. my personal fave is forest yoga with cher. if you're in a similar situation check out yogadownload.com there are even some free 20 minute classes!  don't get carried away though...be sure to get back to the studio and connect with your local yogis.

okay...the time is now. this is my latest affirmation and mantra.  i have a few messages to myself in random spots in my kitchen.  the time is now.  a reminder of the book...'the power of now' by eckhart tolle.  everything is okay right now. in this moment, this action, right now.  in 2012 i intend to live in the now as much as possible.

fingertips at home row
delivering the flow
of my mind
it's time to stop the rewind
quit being behind
the time
the past is gone
the future is strong
but the now belongs
in the music
of your songs
like my freestyle
it's been a while
but i'ma make ya smile
with my lyrical steez
urban dictionaries
if you don't follow with ease
like my rhymes come to me
i type to slow to catch the flow
of my lyrics
for now you hear it
in the now
don't fear it...

i gotta do that more often.  i'm asleep. if you want to write spoken word, just do it. sit down and write. see what comes to mind.  it's all good writing if you take the time to do it. don't fall asleep.
i'm putting together a show..."when i grow up" an evening of spoken word with tanya malcolm.
stay tuned...

for carol

i answered the phone only to hear my father's upset voice..."listen! carol just died!"  all the air in my lungs escaped and before i could inhale i gasped "shut up!" and for those of you who don't know my father - he's not a man who easily does that- but he did. and so over phone lines i knew his message was true. over phone lines we shared silence, the stillness of allowing our hearts to take on a different shape.  expanding with love and shuddering with the notion of life without carol. remind me to ask my dad to work on his delivery skills.  then i knew i had to write- write this piece to honour her.  but carol can't lose her life because carol is life! just say her name...carol...it exudes an energy that won't ever leave this realm.  carol is many things but mainly carol is.
i was lucky to spend a couple of years with her - roommates.  i was 19 she was 45.  what a blessing that was to be mothered so subtly to grow a friendship that led to her becoming my tell everything aunt, my inspiration, my trust in the creator, my maid of honour, my rock.
i always looked forward to hearing her at the end of the line with her vibrant greeting "how ya doin' kiddo?!" and even though i never hesitated to connect with her the thing about having a rock like carol is when you call her to declare the injustice of some particular experience you can count on her to be loyal to fairness - it never failed- the sentence that inevitably began with "in all fairness..." which in most cases has you analyzing the situation in an entirely different perspective that usually points out your over-reaction.  not exactly the outcome you were looking for but usually the advice you needed.
carol is the definition of grit.  that certain quality that motivated her to go above and beyond.  it showed up in her passion for work and her love of her family, friends, colleagues and animals.  she pushed through adversity no matter what. like 16 days without power in the ice storm of 1998. 9 of those days without telephone service and a scared silly niece trying to act brave in what seemed to me like a life or death situation but to carol it was more like winter camping.  she relocated the entire contents of her fridge and freezer into dugout compartments in the snowbanks of the path to her home-did i mention her aptitude for being thrifty? she started dinner at 6 am in her dutch oven on top of her wood stove, hauled bucket by bucket of water for the "nags" from the creek by snowshoe! encouraging her very reluctant and fashion conscious niece to try a pair on, then boosting my esteem with her signature cheer " atta girl!" she cooked eggs outside on her coleman stove, beaming and reminding me to thank my grandmother and all the hardworking women of our past.
oh! and the sight of carol swiftly travelling by moonlight from the barn to the house only wearing a small towel and snowshoes, entering the house soaking wet, shampoo in her hair, laughing hysterically trying to ask me where the jerry can was because the generator had run out of gas while she tried to shower....and me horrified that she'd die of hypothermia and leave me alone in the sheer disaster that was this ice storm!
but no. she had only lessons of survival and stories of grandma in the height of the feminist movement telling her she was crazy because just when women had all they need, laundry service, dishwashers, microwaves, food processors and tupperware she wanted to work outside the home! and on days when we'd be up at 5:30 just to get to work on time after chores we'd laugh and agree - maybe grandma was right?!
we all have our memories, glimpses of special moments- many that occurred at precisely 9 o'clock each evening when carol would connect with her sister robin.  too many phone calls to remember - but what always inspired me was the commitment to their sisterhood.  they were each others constants, sure as the stars in the night sky...sometimes full of surprises - like carol hollering for me at 2 am in the dead of winter to "get down here!"  confused, half asleep, protesting she's pushing me out the door in duck boots and a down coat insisting "just trust me!" the two of us shivering in our night gowns, sitting on top of fences that some of you helped us build. staring up at the night sky - dancing green, blue and pink - the northern lights.
i was a confused young woman who wound up on burnt lands road. an experienced farm hand, but also a real pain in the butt! carol always believed in the genuine good in people and trusted with her whole heart that goodness would prevail.  my time on her farm shaped who i am today.  one particular night over young love heartache, tears and home brew she was trying to convince me "he wasn't worth it." she said " just wait until you're in your thirties! your thirties are the best time in your life! you're still as hot as you were in your twenties, but you'll have all the confidence you're lacking now."  i like to think she was right again...really though, that was seriously good advice. i expected confidence.
when i first started sharing stories of romance on the campus of ottawa u she'd soak them up and say she was living vicariously through me.  but shortly after i arrived on the farm tom showed up.  slowly over dinners the conversation shifted. she'd share a few stories and tom...she was smitten.
it was the happiest i remember her.  she said it over and over again "that man brings out the best in me."  thank you tom for being just what she needed - because for a little while all that vicariously living talk made me a tad bit nervous...
last weekend i spoke with carol.  she said she was proud of me, proud of who i've become.  at the time i laughed it off, no response.  partly because it meant so much to me to hear her say that, and partly because i thought it was funny! i still had so much to learn before i felt i would be anything like her. the woman i always hoped to turn out like. now that's something to be proud of.
carol took care of me.  you are all here for the same reason.  carol is the most reliable person in the universe.  if you need her, she'll be there.  i'm sure she'd want me to say...nothing has changed.
carol will still be our rock.  love does not come to an end.
